If you go to Inhotim, in the state of Minas Gerais, you'll discover a place that's unique in the world. There are pavilions of contemporary art spread throughout an immense botanical garden. It's nearly impossible to describe. People who've been will often say that you really have to go there to feel how it is.

It's very easy to get to Inhotim. From Belo Horizonte, you go 60 km (37 miles) on the highway toward the city of Brumadinho, in the Paraopeba Valley, where the Inhotim Institute is.

It's a 100 hectare (247 acre) area that has been turned into a giant garden, in the style of the landscape architect Burle Marx. There are approximately 5,000 species of plants – 28% of all the plant species that exist on earth. And within this garden are over 500 works of art by renowned Brazilian and international artists, such as Adriana Varejão, Hélio Oiticica, Cildo Meireles, Tunga, Chris Burden and Olafur Eliasson, among others.

The trip merits at least a weekend. That way you'll have time to experience each work of art. Contemporary art is like this – it works by provoking and interacting with the public. Prepare yourself to discover new sounds, images and sensations.

The museum has been open to visitors since 2006 and over 1 million people have already gone there – the elderly, adults and children. It's found a spot in the world's contemporary art scene. It's a trip you won't want to miss.
